Slain Principal Laid to Rest

Family and friends gathered to say farewell to a popular northwest D.C. middle school principal.

Brian Betts, the principal at Shaw at Garnet-Patterson Middle School, was laid to rest Thursday following a 10 a.m. funeral service in Manassas, Va.

On Wednesday night, students by the busload to paid their respects during a viewing. The kids honored their principal Thursday by performing community service.

It was Saturday that Betts was found murdered in his Silver Spring, Md., home. Family and friends had hoped the killer would be behind bars by now, but no arrests have been made. Police have said they believe Betts was still alive at 11:30 p.m. April 14. His body wasn't found until the next evening.

Police said Thursday that a car was seen leaving the alley along Betts's home at 12:15 a.m. April 15. They believe it might be linked to the case and that there may be more than one culprit in Betts's death. His SUV was missing from his home and found a couple days later in southeast D.C.

Betts was a highly respected educator who was hand-picked by D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee and placed at Shaw Middle School. Betts was known for his enthusiasm and dedication to his students.
