Severe Thunderstorms Hit DC Area, One Person Struck by Lightning

Severe thunderstorms and heavy hail injured people, knocked down trees and caused power outages across the D.C. area on Sunday evening.

One person was struck by lightning and suffered serious injuries while taking shelter from the storm at a picnic pavilion at Leesylvania State Park in Prince William County, according to the National Weather Service. Four other people were also injured after being struck by debris from the pavilion.

The storm also knocked down trees across Bethesda.

A tree fell into a house at Jamestown Road and Earlston Road while everyone was home after a girl’s birthday party. Down the road, strong winds knocked down a pine tree that owners say was unique to the area.
