Severe thunderstorms rolled through parts of Maryland and Virginia Thursday afternoon, leading to tornado warnings and reports of hail in parts of the area.
All tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm warnings in the D.C. metro area have now expired.
But the damage was done. There are reports of fallen trees in Bowie, Md., where a storm capable of producing a tornado was reported after 4:30 p.m. It was moving east at 30 mph. That storm was moving over the bay about 5 p.m.
And people in Fredericksburg, Va., Mayo, Md. and Clarksville, Md. tweeted photos of the hail that fell in their yards.
Further north, in central Delaware, serious damage was visible, with houses destroyed and large trees uprooted.
The fast-moving storms disrupted travel as they came through. MARC suspended Penn Line service as the storm caused problems with the overhead electric wires. MARC travel is moving again, though some delays may continue.
Two-way traffic on the Bay Bridge was halted briefly, though it has now reopened.
