The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Washington region until 6 p.m.
A warm and humid air mass has moved into the region and will be in place through much of the week. This will set the stage for the development of scattered afternoon thunderstorms, according to NBC Washington meteorologist Tom Kierein.
There is a slight risk of strong storms that may produce damaging winds and hail. There is even a small chance of an isolated tornado from one of these stronger storm cells.
The threat of severe storms will be at its peak from 3-8 p.m. Monday.
If a severe storm is threatening your neighborhood, get inside and get away from windows. Go to an interior room with no windows, if possible. Or if you have a basement, go there until the storm passes.
Kierein said that each day starting today through Saturday there is a possibility of afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
