Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Issued for D.C. Area

Wild weather caused some problems in the D.C. area Monday afternoon, but the severe storms are likely out of the D.C. area now.

In addition to a severe thunderstorm watch until 8 p.m. for everywhere east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, the National Weather Service issued storm warnings throughout the area.

Lightning was reported in Montgomery County, according to News4 meteorologist Chuck Bell, and a fire in Kensington may have been caused by a lightning strike.

A storm also knocked out power to the Forest Glen Metrorail Station at about 3:15 p.m. The station's six high-speed elevators weren't functioning, so the station was closed until about 4:45 p.m. Trains passed through the station without stopping and and shuttle bus service was established between the Silver Spring and Wheaton stations.

A warning for D.C.; southeastern Montgomery western and Prince George's counties in Maryland; and, in Virginia, Alexandria, Fairfax, Falls Church, Arlington County, Fairfax County and north central Prince William County was in effect until 3:30 p.m. After 2:30 p.m., radar indicated a line of thunderstorms from the American Legion Bridge to Chantilly, Va., moving east at 40 mph and capable of winds up to 60 mph.

Earlier, a warning until 3 p.m. was issued for central Fairfax, southeastern Loudoun, northeastern Fauquier and northwestern Prince William counties. A warning for D.C., Montgomery County, Md.; and Arlington, Loudoun and Fairfax counties in Virginia expired at 2:45 p.m.

By 4 p.m., the severe storms had moved on toward the Eastern Shore, with just a couple of showers lingering in the D.C. area. The chance of rain remains until 9 p.m., as does a slight chance of severe weather, Bell reported.
