Cold Front Brings Rain to D.C. Area

There was a threat of severe thunderstorms Wednesday as a cold front swept through the region.

An area of low pressure and its associated cold front moved through this afternoon and early this evening. As the front arrived, winds increased.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 p.m. for Alleghany, Augusta, Bath, Clarke, Frederick, Highland, Page, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Warren counties in Virginia, as well as the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, Harrisonburg, Lexington, Staunton, Waynesboro and Winchester.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued this afternoon in Virginia as storms capable of producing heavy rain, hail and damaging winds were spotted. Inch-size hail was reported in West Virginia, and wind gusts of 35 mph were reported in Charleston, W.Va., and 36 mph in Roanoke.

Closer to D.C., a tenth to two tenths of an inch of rain fell in some places, and there were some stronger storms.

If a severe storm is threatening where you live, make sure everyone is inside and that they stay away from windows until the storm passes.

Thursday's highs will "only" reach the lower to mid-60s. It will be mostly sunny and mild, but blustery with winds reaching 10-30 mph.
