A severe thunderstorm watch for the D.C. area set to expire at 10 p.m. Wednesday, was called off earlier.
Storms were producing lightning in the College Park, Bowie and Anne Arundel areas as 7 p.m. approached, but the watch was lifted for areas further west by 6:15 p.m., suggesting the chance of and window for severe storms was shrinking. Storm Team 4 Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer predicted the storm watch would be canceled before 10 p.m.
The storms had potential to produce moderate hail and wind damage with gusts up to 60 mph, reported Storm Team 4 Meteorologist Amelia Segal. Downed tree limbs and power outages were a possible threat. There were small chances of a tornado threat and flooding.
The heat wave will continue: High temperatures will be in the high 80s to low 90s for the remainder of the week.
Storms are also possible Thursday afternoon and Friday.
The more sunshine we get Thursday, the hotter it will get, and the higher the temperature, the better chance for severe storms, Kammerer said.
