Ryan Zimmerman to Return in Left Field for Nationals

The Washington Nationals activated Ryan Zimmerman off the disabled list Tuesday. He will make his return to the lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies in left field.

Of course, Zimmerman has been Washington's regular third baseman since his rookie season in 2006, but shoulder problems have led to major throwing issues. Moving him into the outfield will alleviate those concerns as he will not be forced to make throws across the diamond.

“I’ve come to some self-realizations," Zimmerman recently told The Washington Post. "I’ll be the first to say it. I’ve never shied away from the truth. The last two years have been rough for me [at third base]. I’ve had to do an excess of work to be able to do what I used to do naturally. People keep asking me if six weeks off will help my [surgically repaired] shoulder. Six weeks off? Go six years back, maybe. It’s tough. It’s bone and joint.

“I’m comfortable playing wherever it helps the team. That’s why we’re all here."

Zimmerman, who played in left field during recent rehab outings, missed the past 44 games with a broken right thumb.
