Laura Reed knows what her clients are going through -- especially those that she serves for hours each week at a Rockville homeless center.
She was once homeless, too. Reed says she spent many of her teenage years “[living] out of a paper bag” and being “transferred to different homes."
It's why she identifies with the people she meets at the center.
“She was talking to me asking me, ‘What is your story?’ I want to know your story,” said one of the recipients of Reed’s haircuts.
Reed volunteers weekly at Interfaith Works - Wilkins Avenue Women’s Assessment Center providing free haircuts. The ladies get their hair washed and trimmed, with Reed asking how they'd like it done.
“I have a trade and I’m lucky to be able to have that and to be able to give back to people that are in need,” said Reed.
Reed has also given hundreds of haircuts to people on the streets. She says that her “purpose is to give back to people.”

The center’s Program Director Diana Bernhardt believes Reed’s services are crucial for the women at the shelter looking for employment.
“This really helps our ladies who are going through a difficult time rebuild some of their self esteem,” said Bernhardt.
Reed and her friends from her Rockville salon, Salon4, also frequently hold clothing and undergarment drives.
“I just say find your passion. Find what you love and go for it. Give back because you get so much back in return when you do that,” said Reed.
