Robbers Posing as Utility Workers, Dominion Warns

Dominion Virginia Power is warning its customers about a scam in which robbers try to gain access to homes by posing as utility workers.

The Richmond-based energy company says several incidents have been reported to police in the past few days in northern Virginia.

Dominion says its employees rarely need to enter a home to provide service.

Contractors working on Dominion conservation programs may contact customers directly to schedule an appointment and should carry proper identification.

The company says it maintains an up-to-date list of all its employees, authorized contractors and independent contractors.

Dominion can be reached at 1-866-DOM-HELP to verify the identity of anyone who says they work for the company. If customers feel threatened, they are encouraged to call 911.

Dominion has about 2.3 million customers in Virginia.
