Retired Doctor Says Someone Stole His ID, Fraudulently Billed Medicare $18,000

A retired doctor from Maryland says the government is garnishing his pension because someone stole his identity and fraudulently billed Medicare for thousands of dollars.

Dr. Jon White was a surgeon with the VA Medical Center for almost 30 years. He said whoever stole his identity claimed to have an office in Dupont Circle and billed Medicare for $18,000.

There is no medical office at the Dupont Circle address, and now a government collection agency is garnishing his pension monthly until it gets all the money back, White said.

White sought the help of Chevy Chase Village Police Chief John Fitzgerald.

“He didn't do anything wrong,” Fitzgerald said. “His money will repay the federal government for someone else's crime.”

White said he hasn’t been able to learn who received the fraudulent payment or where it was sent.

He said he has gotten the attention of a fraud investigator with the Office of the Inspector General and hopes there will be an investigation.
