A longtime columnist for The Washington Post lost his battle with prostate cancer. William Raspberry passed away yesterday at his home in the District. He was 76.
Mr. Raspberry wrote a column for The Washington Post for almost four decades. He touched on social issues, including education, poverty and race. His column was eventually syndicated in more than 200 publications nationwide.
His work earned Mr. Raspberry the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 1994. He was just the second African-American columnist ever to win the prestigious award.
After penning more than 5,000 columns, he retired in 2005.
