Region Could See Snow Saturday

Chance of flurries Saturday, then "stupid cold" Sunday

Overcast skies could spell rain on Friday night and then some light snow over the weekend but the real change coming with this system is the cold.

Clouds moved in from the west throughout the day, bringing moisture into the region. Temperatures in the 40s will be too warm for snow to fall, but the area could see some showers Friday night.

But those clouds will form into a complex system, bringing snow chances early Saturday. After midnight, there could be a mixture of rain and snow in the area, Storm4 Chief Meteorologist Doug Kammerer said. By 6:30 a.m., it could be all snow along the I-95 corridor, including some of southern Maryland. Kammerer expects most people in the area to wake up to a little bit of snow on the ground, but he doesn't expect problems on the road.

There will be a second chance for snow later Saturday, as clouds from the south bring more moisture.  Areas north and west of the District could see a light snowfall, but accumulations will likely only be seen on grassy areas. Expect a coating to 2 inches of snow to accumulate.

In Frederick counties in Virginia and Maryland as well as the West Virginia panhandle, a winter weather advisory is in place.

The District has already put 60 plows on standby just in case they are needed. Pepco is keeping a close eye on the weather and has scheduled additional line personnel and tree trimming crews from Friday evening through the weekend in case of power outages.

By Saturday night, find that puffy coat. Colder air will blast into the region, sending morning temperatures plunging into the teens. Storm4 meteorologist Tom Kierein warned it could be "stupid cold." People in some areas could wake up to single-digit wind chills. During the daytime Sunday it will be windy, with a high only around 35 degrees.
