Washington Redskins safety Su’a Cravens was pulled over for speeding in a school enforcement zone in Virginia, but he says he was racially profiled.
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office said Cravens, 22, was pulled over for traveling 39 mph in a 25 mph zone near the Farmwell Station Middle School in Ashburn, Virginia, on Nov. 29. Deputies said they were doing traffic stops in the school enforcement zone as a part of a safety initiative.
The sheriff's office says Cravens was also cited for having an illegal tint on his windows.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy initiated the traffic stop after Craven’s car was caught by a laser device traveling over the posted speed limit. They said Cravens pulled into a shopping center during the traffic stop.
But Cravens claims he was racially profiled and roughed up during the stop.
According to his tweets posted on Dec. 18, Cravens recorded two videos after he was released from the squad car when he was stopped by police. He said he was handcuffed while officers searched his car.
"This man opened up my door and said I smelled like weed," Carvens said in the video.
Police did not mention any search of the car in their statement. Requests for comment from Cravens or his agent were not answered.
Cravens was recently cleared to resume football activities after suffering from post-concussion syndrome. In September, he said he wanted to retire, but his agent said the second-year player was looking forward to returning to football in 2018.
