Redskins Going Green for Solar Bowl

It’s the first bowl game of the season, but you won’t see any college teams playing. Today’s game between the Redskins and the Arizona Cardinals has been dubbed the NRG Solar Bowl.

This week NRG Energy completed the installation of the largest solar field at an NFL stadium outside FedEx Field. The 8,000 solar panels actually provide shaded parking over one of the stadiums lots and there are 10 electric vehicle charging stations.

On game days, the panels will provide about 20 percent of FedEx field’s power. But on non-game days, all of the stadiums power will be derived from the solar system.

The partnership between NRG and the Redskins has also transformed Gate A into the NRG solar plaza. That’s where fans will see a 30-foot tall football player sculpture made out of flexible solar panels and film.

The whole system will be started up at halftime of today’s game when former Redskins quarterbacks Joe Theismann and Mark Rypien flip the switch. Hall of Famer Joe Montana and Quarterback Doug Flutie will also be on hand to join the celebration.
