Ready, Set, Go! ‘Running of the Chihuahuas’ Brings Furry Friends to DC Wharf

In the furriest, and probably funniest, Cinco de Mayo celebration in D.C., 128 pint-sized pooches raced in groups of eight on a 60-foot race track Saturday afternoon at The Wharf.

The event was free to attend, but it cost $30 to enter a chihuahua in the race. It was just like the Kentucky Derby -- maybe a few more Coronas in hand, but definitely a similar number of fun hats and outfits.

All entry fees went to Rural Dog Rescue, a D.C. based non-profit organization dedicated to saving dogs from high-kill shelters in rural areas of Virginia, West Virginia, and North and South Carolina. The organization had a tent where spectators could meet dogs like this one that are up for adoption.
