Storms Drench DC Region; More Coming Friday

A strong line of severe storms moved through during Thursday's evening commute and more storms are expected Friday.

Heavy rains flooded roadways throughout the area, including Waples Mill Road in Fairfax, Virginia.

A flood warning remains in effect for Culpeper and Spotsylvania counties in Virginia. A flash flood watch for the D.C. area has expired. See all weather alerts here.

Some areas were expected to get 2-4 inches of rain.

Flood warnings were in effect for areas already hit hard by Sunday's storms.

Officials in Ellicott City said earlier Thursday they were preparing to deal with more flooding.

Crews have dug out tree stumps, building debris and mill stones from storm drains and culverts in Ellicott City since flooding devastated the area Sunday. More than 8 inches of rain dumped down on Ellicott City in about five hours, causing powerful flood waters to turn Main Street into a river and sweeping away cars like they were toys.

The flooding left one man dead and destroyed businesses less than two years after a 2016 flood ravaged the town.

Officials urged residents to stay alert and said it's hard to predict what areas could get localized heavy rainfall during storms forecast for Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Swift-water rescue teams in Albemarle County are looking for two people who were swept away from a rural road.

Emergency officials have been warning not to drive on roads where floodwaters are deep enough to obscure the yellow lines. Officials in the county say some roads have been washed away.

Friday is also going to be a hot and humid day with highs near 90. A dry day with peaks of sunshine will lead into a wet evening. Storm Team4 says the increase in heat and humidity will likely cause heavy rain and severe storms with hail and gusty winds.

There will be rain at times on Saturday and Sunday, and Storm Team4 says Sunday will be significantly cooler with high temperatures in the 60s.
