Questions Remain About Future of Current FBI Headquarters

As the possible locations of the future headquarters for the FBI are narrowed to three, questions remain about the current headquarters in downtown D.C.

Whether the General Services Administration chooses Landover, Greenbelt Metro or Springfield for its new FBI headquarters, the value in the deal will be the land swap of the Hoover building location. The developer who wins the bid to build the new FBI headquarters will in exchange get to redevelop the old FBI headquarters on Pennsylvania Avenue in one of D.C.’s highest commercial rent districts.

Documents obtained by the News4 I-Team show the FBI isn’t sure how much the property is actually worth.

A congressional subcommittee questioned the FBI swap deal. According transcripts, the last FBI headquarters appraisal was in 2010. The subcommittee asked whether the GSA anticipates the costs of a new FBI campus will be entirely covered in the exchange.

“We anticipate the competitive forces of the exchange and the unique characteristics of the Hoover site will maximize its value,” GSA Administrator Dan Tangherlini said.
