Principal Dismissed at Troubled Anacostia School

Firing follows months of violence

District school officials have dismissed Kisha Webster, the principal of troubled Hart Middle School in Anacostia.

The firing follows two months of violence that included assaults on at least three teachers.

In a letter to parents Monday, Chancellor Michelle Rhee said Webster would be replaced by central office administrator Billy Kearney, who has been serving as the school system's director of principal recruitment.

Rhee launched an intervention effort at the school last week, sending in additional security officers and a team of administrators after three teachers were assaulted, a teen was charged with carrying a shotgun and students ran through the hallways discharging fire extinguishers, according to the Washington Post.

The D.C. middle school has had plenty of academic issues to go along with those disciplinary problems.  Only 17 percent of its students read at proficiency level last year, leading to a mandatory overhaul under federal law, the paper reported.

Webster told The Washington Post she was "set up." She said she was not given the resources made available to other struggling schools.
