Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Won't Seek Reelection After More Than 50 Years

Paul Ebert prosecuted Bobbitt, DC sniper cases

Virginia’s longest-serving commonwealth’s attorney is not running for reelection.

After 51 years, Prince William County Commonwealth’s Attorney Paul Ebert said the decision is in part because of a health concern, and also, “I’ve had a good run,” he told News4.

Ebert was first sworn in in January 1968.

He has since prosecuted some of Virginia’s most famous trials, including the trial of Lorena Bobbitt, who was charged with cutting off her husband’s penis. He was charged with abuse.

Last year, he told News4 the case and conviction that brought him the most satisfaction was D.C. sniper John Allen Muhammad.

Ebert often summarizes his career this way: “I always have said my claim to the fame is I prosecuted the snipper and the sniper.”
