Virginia Man Dies While Working on Car After Asking 8-Year-Old Boy to Start It, Police Say

A man died after an accident while working on his car after asking an 8-year-old boy to start the vehicle, Fairfax County Police said.

David Sifuentes, 29, of Centreville, Virginia, was repairing his 2001 Volkswagen sedan Saturday on Prince Way. About 1 p.m., he asked an 8-year-old boy who was inside the car to start it, investigators said.

Sifuentes was standing outside the driver's side door when the car started moving in reverse. Sifuentes grabbed the steering wheel to try to stop the car, but it continued through the parking lot and over a curb before hitting a townhouse.

Sifuentes was thrown from the car and hit the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No one else was injured.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, police said. Detectives from the county's crash reconstructive unit responded to the scene, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
