Police Seeking Help Identifying Car Potentially Involved in Beating

Police are seeking the public's help identifying the car and occupants in a surveillance video taken from a gas station.

MPD says the car may be connected to a robbery and assault in southeast D.C. on Aug. 18.

The young husband and father -- Thomas Maslin -- lives on Capitol Hill and had sought help from neighbors before being attacked. Police are treating the case as an aggravated assault.

"It's absolutely critical that people watch the video and that we figure out who is responsible for this because there's a very good chance it could happen again," said Abby Maslin, the victim's wife.

The three occupants of the car in the video attempted to use the victim's credit card at the Exxon station, located in the 1200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE shortly after the assault.

Maslin had left the Tune Inn at Fourth Street and Pennsylvania in Southeast about 12:30 a.m. to walk home. At 12:57 a.m., someone attempted to use his credit card, News4's Pat Collins reported. At 8:30 a.m., Maslin was found unconscious by a passerby who called 911.

Maslin has since had two brain operations at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Abby Maslin said he is improving and responding, Collins reported.

"One of the greatest moments that we head was that a wrote him a message -- I didn't read it to him -- but it said, 'Can you put up two fingers?' and I just held it up for him, and he did it," she said. "So that's a huge step from where we were."

Police are encouraging anyone who can identify the occupants or who has knowledge of this incident to call police at (202) 727-9099 or text 50411.
