Police: Driver Crashed, Left Passenger for Dead in Gainesville

The driver crashed, fled and left behind a passenger who died, police say

Police in Northern Virginia are looking for the driver of an SUV who they say ran off and left a passenger for dead after a crash.

Prince William County Police say the single-vehicle crash occurred before 3 a.m. Monday near the intersection of James Madison Highway and Thoroughfare Road  in Gainesville, about two miles south of I-66. 

Police say the driver of a 2001 Toyota 4-Runner lost control and crashed the SUV, which which rolled. According to police, the driver then fled the scene.

A man who was in the backseat was thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. He was not identified immediately. 

A front seat passenger, a man who was wearing a seat belt, suffered minor injuries.

Police used dogs and a helicopter to search for the driver, who was not identified immediately.
