Police: Maryland Man Mistakes Friend for Turkey, Shoots Him

A Maryland man suffered minor injuries when his friend mistook him for a turkey and shot him.

Dennis Eugene Yoder, 66, and James Henry Gilbert, 67, set up to hunt within 50 yards of each other on leased Chesapeake Forest Land in Whaleyville on Jan. 20, as was their practice.

With an obstructed line of sight, Yoder spied movement and what he thought was the red-and-white coloring of a turkey, and fired his shotgun, Maryland Natural Resources Police said in a statement.

Gilbert yelled that he was hit. Yoder drove Gilbert to a hospital, where he was treated for pellet wounds to his head, legs and hand, and released.

The Worcester County State's Attorney is reviewing the case for possible charges.
