Shoplifting Suspect Shot, Killed by Deputy Near Frederick

Suspect Apparently Threatened State Trooper With Scissors

FREDERICK, Md. -- A shoplifting suspect was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy Friday morning near Frederick, according to the Frederick County Sheriff's Office.

A man stole a necklace worth more than $500 from Kay Jewelers in Francis Scott Key mall and was chased by state troopers, the sheriff's office said. A plain-clothes deputy joined the pursuit, and when the suspect threatened the troopers with scissors after refusing orders to drop them, the deputy shot the suspect, according to the sheriff.

The 38-year-old deputy has been with the sheriff's office for 12 years.

The shooting was reported about 11 a.m. at New Horizon Way and Spectrum Drive near a Holiday Inn.
