Man Fatally Shot in Southwest D.C.; 90th Homicide of 2015

D.C. police are investigating the shooting death of a man in the southwest section of the city Tuesday.

The victim was shot in the 200 block of Elmira Street SW.  He was shot in the chest, ribs and upper arm area. Police say he was conscious when being transported to a local hospital, but he later died.

The shooting is being investigated as a homicide, but no suspect has been named, said police spokesman Sean Hickman.

Officials have not released further details about the shooting, such as the victim's name or age.

The 4300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SW is closed due to the ongoing investigation. 

The slaying marks the 90th homicide this year in Washington. The District had 71 homicides at this time last year. A total of 105 homcides were recorded in D.C. in all of 2014.

The deadly shooting happened less than a mile away from a double stabbing in the 100 block of Joliet Street, which happened about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday.
