Police: Gunman Shoots Up Uber in Northeast DC, Injuring Driver and Passenger

A bullet struck the Uber driver in his finger and shattered glass scratched a passenger's face

A suspect fired multiple shots at an Uber in Northeast D.C. Friday night, injuring the driver and sending passengers running.

The Uber driver was going northbound in the 3700 block of 17th Place NE with three passengers when gunshots hit his Nissan Altima about 11:30 p.m., according to a police report.

One bullet struck the driver's left middle finger. Another shattered the back driver's side window. The passenger sitting behind the driver suffered scratches to her face from the broken glass.

The driver was taken to a hospital, police said.

The three passengers ran off after the bullets disabled the car. But they came back to the scene later to tell police what they saw.

Both the driver and the passenger sitting behind him said they saw a man standing on the corner of 17th Place and Otis Place NE at the time of the shooting. The passenger told police the gunman was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt.

Another passenger said she at first thought the gunfire was fireworks and she and the other two passengers yelled at the driver to keep going when the shots rang out.

But the bullets forced the car to stop in its tracks.

Police say the car sustained gunshots to the driver's side window, tire, door and front fender.

The suspect ran away.
