Police Focus on HOV Cheaters in D.C. Suburbs

Police in the Washington area are cracking down on cheaters in the high-occupancy vehicle lanes.

Six law enforcement agencies are participating in Thursday's "Capitol Region HOV Awareness Day.''

It's focused on Interstates 66, 95, 270, 395 and the Dulles Toll Road.

“Gentleman once asked me if his dog counted as part of the HOV exemption, and I told him it wasn’t,” Virginia State Police Trooper Jared Allen told News4's Adam Tuss.

HOV lanes are reserved during rush hours for vehicles carrying two or more people. They are meant to encourage ride-sharing to reduce traffic congestion and fuel consumption.
