1-Year-Old Boy Shot in Northeast DC, Released From Hospital

A 1-year-old boy has been released from a hospital after he was shot while in his backyard Monday night in Northeast D.C.

The boy was in a stroller and other children were playing when three men started arguing and shots were fired, police said. Officers were called to the 1300 block of I Street NE about 9 p.m. Monday and arrived to find the little boy suffering from a gunshot wound.

"It was very unfortunate that we had a little boy struck, but it could have been a lot worse," Chief Peter Newsham said.

Police said they are close to making three arrests.

"We've made significant progress in the case and we anticipate we'll be able to bring the folks responsible into custody," Newsham said.

The little boy was taken to Children's National Medical Center in serious condition. He was conscious and breathing. He was released from the hospital Tuesday and is recovering at home.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the boy's family with medical expenses.
