Points for Panthers: Teen Shoots Hoops to Benefit School for Boys Who Need a Hand

Stone Ridge High School junior Kathryn Maloney started charity

For a second year, a Maryland teenager will take to the basketball court to benefit kids who need a hand Sunday.

Points for Panthers is a one-woman hoop-a-thon. Stone Ridge High School junior Kathryn Maloney, 16, raised more than $6,000 for Washington Jesuit Academy by making 2,500 shots last year.

โ€œWe are a school for underprivileged kids, grades five through eight, all boys,โ€ WJA Headmaster Marcus Washington said. โ€œWe go to school 11 hours of the day, 11 months out of the year, and you have to work very, very hard, and weโ€™re going to put a lot of resources into you to help the mind, body and spirit grow to be the best that it possibly can be.โ€

Every penny that funds WJA comes from donations like Kathrynโ€™s.

โ€œIt means that youโ€™re doing great work and it means that there are great people out there that can help ensure that WJA continues well into the future,โ€ Washington said. โ€œIt means that the message of community service, the message that we all have something that we can give back is resonating out there with our young kids.โ€
