Two Small Planes Collide in Fauquier County

Virginia State Police investigating in southern Fauquier County

Two people died after two small planes collided in mid-air Monday afternoon above a secluded area of southern Fauquier County.

Virginia State Police were back on the scene Tuesday, working with the NTSB to investigate the crash.

Officials said the planes collided at about 4 p.m. Monday and then crashed to the ground about a mile apart from each other.  One of the planes caught fire when it hit the ground.  Parts of the planes and debris scattered between the two crash sites.

The pilot of the plane that burst into flames and a passenger in that plane died at the scene of the crash. They were in a six-seater aircraft. Police are still waiting for identifications to be made.

The pilot of the second plane -- Thomas R. Provin, 70, of Broad Run, Va. -- was transported to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va.

Provin's condition was not available, but officials said he was conscious and talking to the first Virginia State troopers who arrived at the scene. He was still in the hospital on Tuesday.

He had been flying a 1965 Piper PA28140.

The crash site is wooded and difficult to access, said Corinne Geller of Virginia State Police on Monday.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but police received several calls from people in the area at the time of the crash.
