Pilot Who Warned About Helicopter Safety Fired

Peterson warned days before crash

Maryland State Police have fired a medevac pilot for refusing to cooperate with an internal safety probe.

Pete Peterson had warned days before a fatal crash in September that Maryland's fleet was not operated safely.

State police spokesman Greg Shipley says Peterson was fired Friday for his refusal to cooperate in the investigation and for "other issues." Shipley could not discuss those because they are personnel issues.

But Shipley did say Peterson declined to give police officials the maintenance records he said could prove there were dangers across the 12-helicopter fleet.

Peterson is a nine-year veteran of the unit. He did not comment to The (Baltimore) Sun on Friday except to acknowledge that he was fired. Peterson also confirmed that he sent an e-mail to federal officials warning of "deeply troubling latent failures" in the police Aviation Command.
