Surprise visitor in Spring Valley, D.C. Cicada found on our deck this afternoon. It's about four years early or from another brood that is not Brood X, which visited in 2004.

Cicada emerging, taken in Annandale (intersection of Little River Turnpike and Pinecrest Parkway), last Thursday, May 11. Just one of hundreds of cicadas I've seen this past week around Annandale (link to my album). According to an interactive cicada map, it looks like we're having an invasion of these in the D.C. metropolitan area, but I haven't heard them mentioned on the news at all. This variety is periodic, not annual.

I've been in the D.C. area long enough to have lived through a couple of cicada cycles but this was a first -- a cicada actually emerging from its exoskeleton! Wow!

I started seeing cicadas when I went out for a late run on May 10 in Lyons Village in Arlington, VA. It was the first time I've ever seen them coming out of their larva shell, which I captured in the interesting but somewhat unnerving photo. I'm still seeing them on the sidewalks at night, but there are fewer now.

I am sending you two pictures of cicadas from our yard. The first one is just one of our many trees that are covered. The second one is unusual. I have never seen it before. It is a white cicada and I think they are called magicicadas. At least that's what google told me. Silver Spring, MD
