Petroleum Leak Mars Portion of Four Mile Run

People warned to stay out of the water

Arlington County, Va., is warning people to keep themselves and their pets out of Four Mile Run stream following a petroleum leak.

Arlington's Fire Department discovered the petroleum this morning at 8 a.m. after people called complaining about a fuel smell in the stream.

Specifically, the affected area of Four Mile Run is between Interstate 395 and the Potomac River. The county said people and their pets should avoid wading or fishing in the stream, and should just generally stay away from the area.

County employees said they don't know where the petroleum-based substance came from, but they are investigating.

Booms are in place to contain the oil and the county says the stream will naturally flush itself out.
