Kids Made Up Story About Mysterious Clown Sightings, Annapolis Police Say

Police in Annapolis, Maryland, say several children have admitted to making up a story about seeing people dressed as clowns in different neighborhoods in the city.

The kids claimed that the most recent incident happened on Bens Drive near Victor Parkway at about 8:30 a.m. Monday.

False sightings were also reported in the 700 block of Newtowne Drive and the 1400 block of Tyler Avenue. The first such incident was reported last Thursday, according to police.

Only children reported the false incidents. Police previously said it wasn't clear whether the incidents were a bad prank or malicious in nature.

It's unclear why the children fabricated the story. Police said shortly before noon Tuesday that it wasn't true.

Mysterious sightings of creepy clowns have been reported in other states in recent weeks.

Earlier this month, police in Lexington, South Carolina, received reports about two people -- one dressed as a clown and the other as a bear -- reportedly trying to convince children to get into their vehicle.
