Pedestrian Hit, Killed Near Dumfries Commuter Lot

No Stoplights, Crosswalks

Miguel Zelaya-Jovel, 38, of Manassas, Va., parked his car in a commuter lot in Dumfries, then dashed across the street to grab a bite to eat.

On his way back, he was struck and killed by a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

The incident happened about 6:30 a.m. Friday, when Zelaya-Jovel tried to cross Dumfries Road in Prince William County, Va. His relatives said he'd been working for a contractor that's making safety improvements on the commuter lot there.

Today, several commuters who use the lot complained that there are no crosswalks or stoplights to help people cross Dumfries Road safely. One woman said she hopes that will change.

"I definitely think there needs to be a crosswalk or light of some sort, because this has always been dangerous," said commuter Cheylan Shoope. "I've tried to cross it before and you can never time it right in any direction. It's really scary. I'm not surprised [the accident happened]. It's so sad."

The driver of the pickup truck stayed on the scene and has not been charged. Police are also looking for the driver of a white box truck who they believe also struck the man. This driver may not know he or she hit someone.

Zelaya-Jovel was a father, brother and son who had lived in this area for 11 years. He's originally from El Salvador. Relatives said he had been laid off recently, but found a new job and was headed there this morning when he was killed.
