An 81-year-old man died Tuesday morning after being hit by a pickup truck while trying to cross a street in Silver Spring.
The pedestrian was struck around 6:30 a.m. at University Boulevard and Arcola Avenue. He has been identified as Ernest Malvin Rounds of Silver Spring.
According to a preliminary investigation, police say Rounds was trying to cross University Boulevard West when he was struck by a 2004 Ford F250. It's currently unknown whether he was in a crosswalk.
Authorities initially believed Rounds had serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Suburban Hospital, but his condition deteriorated and he died around 9:25 a.m.
The driver of the pickup and his passenger stayed on the scene. Montgomery County Police said the driver is a 44-year-old Silver Spring man. He has not been charged.
Police sent an accident reconstruction team to the scene, and are asking anyone with information to contact the Collision Reconstruction Unit at 240-773-6620. Callers may remain anonymous.
