Police: Spotsylvania County Man Killed Wife, Daughter, Himself

A Spotsylvania County, Virginia, man killed his wife and daughter and then took his own life, police believe.

Robert Scully, 69, was found dead along with his wife, 68-year-old Mary Scully, and their daughter, 38-year-old Meghan Scully, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office said Sunday.

Police said in an update Monday that they believe Robert Scully was the shooter. The medical examiner performed autopsies on Monday.

Officers went to the family's home on the 7900 block of Waterford Drive after a neighbor said they saw the family's dog running around the area and the door to the house was open.

Deputies went to the house and tried to call out to the residents. Then, they saw someone slumped over in a chair.

All three family members had been shot.

The weapon believed to have been used in the killings was found at the home.

Neighbors said they were stunned by the deaths. They said the family had lived in their house for decades. But some said they had never seen Mary Scully or her adult daughter, who was disabled.

"I think a lot of people are walking around with a lot of hurt and pain. You see [them] every day and you don't realize how bad it is for them," one neighbor said.
