Two people were found dead inside an overturned vehicle Friday afternoon in a river in Ellicott City, Maryland, officials say.
The two people were found in a vehicle in the Little Patuxent River near Route 108 and Columbia Road, Howard County police said. They were not immediately identified.
According to a preliminary investigation, the vehicle appears to have been headed west on Route 108 when it crashed into the river. When and why it happened was not immediately known.
Police say the incident is not believed to be related to the severe flooding in Ellicott City in late May.
Someone was walking in the area around 12:50 p.m. when they noticed the vehicle in the water and contacted police.
Emergency crews found the two people and worked to remove the vehicle from the river.
Chopper4 footage shows a vehicle upside down in the river between the westbound and eastbound lanes of Route 108, west of Route 29.
Route 108 westbound was closed during the investigation.
