Oprah Donates $1M to DC Nonprofit for Homeless Women

A D.C. organization that helps women coping with homelessness got a huge surprise Thursday: a $1 million donation from Oprah Winfrey.

Winfrey spoke Thursday afternoon at the sold-out annual luncheon of N Street Village, a downtown D.C. nonprofit that provides housing and employment services.

"Greatness is determined by service," Winfrey said, according to the organization. "So, thank you, N Street Village, for your service -- for meeting women exactly where they are. Which is the key to anything in life -- being able to accept a person exactly where they are, and meet them there on their own ground."

Winfrey, who was the keynote speaker at the event held at The Ritz-Carlton, picked up a pledge card and filled it out on stage, The Washington Post reported.

"Everyone absolutely went wild," an attendee told the Post.

N Street Village is the largest provider of women-only services for the District's homeless population, the group says. They serve more than 1,500 women per year.
