A man was shot and killed early Friday near a large apartment complex in Fairfax County.

Fairfax County Police responded about 2:20 a.m. to the 6000 block of Richmond Highway in the Alexandria section of the county, where they found 24-year-old Tarreece John Sampson unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

His girlfriend told News4's Chris Gordon he returned home to find a crime in progress.

"I heard from his mom," Kaitlin Moylan said through her tears. "As far as I know, he got home and walked into a situation where people were burglaring cars, and he tried to ask them what they were doing or what was going on and they shot him."

Investigators collected evidence at three crime scenes around the Cityside apartments.

Residents of the complex are affected by the investigation; access to about 200 cars is blocked.

"Because we have multiple scenes, a lot of these vehicles are obviously going to be blocked in," said Sgt. Roger Henriquez of Fairfax County Police. "They're not going to be able to get their cars this morning until we conduct our investigation."

Sampson worked as teacher's assistant at Fort Hunt Elementary School for Fairfax County Public Schools.

"He was the most beautiful heart I have ever known," Moylan said. "He just wanted to help the youth. He had extremely strong faith in God and whatever God had planned for him. He was really going to change the world."

No information on a suspect or motive was released.
