One Long Trash Trip

Silver Spring native says his group was looking for ideas to inspire people

You could call it one big trash trek.

Led by a Maryland native, the members of the Pick Up America initiative will begin an 18-month journey across the country on Saturday morning and plan to pick up trash from Maryland to California.

Assateague Island will be the starting gate for the group of recent college graduates, who will start walking toward Berlin from the base of the Verrazano Bridge.

Campaign coordinator Davey Rogner says he and his three fellow walkers expect to reach San Francisco in August 2011. The Silver Spring native says his group was looking for ideas to inspire people to reduce contributions to waste.

"This is the year 2010," Rogner told DelmarvaNow. "What would be a great American story for this generation? Some kids walking across the country to encourage a more sustainable future."

The Pick Up America crew will stop in Berlin for a potluck dinner sponsored by the Coastal Bays program and the community is
invited to join. Bags, gloves and reflective vests will be provided.
