Virginia officials are touting a new law they say will provide a "permanent'' solution to making sure law enforcement agencies properly process evidence from sex assaults.

Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Attorney General Mark Herring attended a ceremonial bill signing Thursday to promote newly passed legislation that establishes a comprehensive procedure for analyzing evidence kits in sexual assault case.

The governor's office said a state audit last year found nearly 3,000 untested kits, mostly related to sexual assault and rape cases.

McAuliffe's office said the new law would double the number of tests performed next year. The new state budget includes $900,000 a year to hire six new DNA examiners.
