Officer's Gun Fires in Struggle at Home Depot

An off-duty D.C. police officer was injured in a fight with a customer at a Northeast Home Depot late Monday morning.

The officer was arriving at the store in the 900 block of Rhode Island Avenue NE to work security when he was alerted to a man suspected of a crime, police said. The officer confronted the customer and a fight ensued. The two struggled for the officer's gun, which discharged.

The officer was taken to a hospital with several minor injuries, including bites from the suspect and a graze wound from a bullet.

The suspect also was transported to a hospital with minor injuries.

Police shut down and evacuated the store to investigate and process the scene. It later reopened.
