Officer Fires Weapon During Struggle, Kills Suspect

The Prince George’s County Police Department said an officer shot and killed a suspect during a struggle on Friday night.

Officials said the unidentified officer was on patrol near Brooks Drive and Marlboro Pike when he heard a car crash and went to investigate. As he arrived, he saw a suspect, Asshams Pharoah Manley, 30, of Forestville, running away from the crash scene.

The officer chased Manley and caught up with him about a block later. Investigators said there was a struggle over the officer’s gun, and Manley was shot during the scuffle.

A second officer arrived and used a Taser on the suspect, who continued to fight with police. The suspect was finally restrained after a third officer arrived.

Manley was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead on Saturday. Tests revealed that Manley had opiates and marijuana in his system at the time of his death.

No officers were injured. The officer who fired his weapon was placed on routine administrative leave, pending the outcome of this investigation.
