About two dozen Occupy Wall Street participants are expected to arrive in the nation's capital after a two-week, 240-mile march from New York.
The protest is known as "Occupy the Highway,'' and it picked up a few additional participants as the marchers made their way through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland.
The marchers are hoping to arrive at the Occupy D.C. encampment in McPherson Square sometime Tuesday.
Their arrival in Washington was planned to coincide with an announcement by the congressional deficit-reduction super-committee on possible cuts and tax increases. Organizer Kelley Brannon says the failure of the super-committee to reach a deal only strengthens the protesters' message that Congress is not addressing the concerns of middle- and lower-income Americans.
The new demonstrators will join an Occupy camp that has undergone some recent infrastructure upgrades. On Monday, News4 cameras caught campers at Freedom Plaza cutting lumber and mixing cement for a more permanent structure, that will apparently serve as a spot for the group to escape the cold.
Occupy D.C.'s permit is set to expire at the end of December.
