New D.C. Traffic Signal Can Automatically Activate by Detecting Pedestrians

Mayor Vincent Gray is showing off a new traffic signal at Chevy Chase Circle

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray is showing off a new traffic signal aimed at helping pedestrians safely cross the street.

The new "HAWK" signal will be unveiled Monday morning near Chevy Chase Circle, at Connecticut Avenue and Northampton Street NW. HAWK stands for High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk.

The signal stops traffic with a red signal and allows pedestrians to cross the street with a walk display.

Officials say it's unique because it can automatically activate at certain locations after detecting the presence of pedestrians.
