New Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Reactor Gets Wetlands Permit

Still faces many regulatory hurdles

A Maryland board has approved a wetlands license for work needed to prepare for a potential third nuclear reactor at the Calvert Cliffs nuclear power plant in Lusby by the Chesapeake Bay.

The Board of Public Works, which includes Gov. Martin O'Malley, Treasurer Nancy Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot, voted 3-0 on Wednesday to approve the license. Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown voted for O'Malley, who did not attend the meeting.

Plans for a third reactor by UniStar Nuclear Energy, a subsidiary of Electricite de France, still face regulatory and business hurdles to move forward, and work won't begin until the plan can move ahead.

UniStar is still searching for a U.S. partner. The plan needs regulatory approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
