Neighbors say a Virginia teen charged in the fatal shooting his girlfriend's parents mowed a swastika about 40 feet across into the grass of a community field two months before the shooting.
Penny Potter tells The Washington Post that after the incident, neighbors in the Reston community talked to the youth's parents instead of going to the police.
The 17-year-old has been charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of 48-year-old Scott Fricker and his wife, 43-year-old Buckley Kuhn-Fricker. The youth, who turned the gun on himself, is hospitalized in critical condition.
Family and friends say the couple had become very concerned about the teen's relationship with their daughter after they found a Twitter account they believed to be linked to him. Friends say the account retweeted posts praising Hitler and making derogatory comments about Jews.
"My daughter and her husband found out about a lot of the Nazi stuff just this past week, and they forbid their daughter to see him again," said Janet Kuhn, Buckley Kuhn-Fricker's mother.
According to The Washington Post, the couple had recently staged an intervention to convince their daughter to break up with the boy. She eventually agreed, her grandmother told the newspaper.
Kuhn said hours before her death, Kuhn-Fricker posted this quote on Facebook: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
The quote was a reference to what was happening with her daughter's boyfriend, Kuhn said.
Friday morning, the couple went to check on their daughter and caught the boyfriend inside her room, Kuhn told The Post.

At some point, there was a confrontation, and the teen pulled out a gun and shot the couple.
The couple's daughter called 911 to report the shooting, 911 dispatch calls reveal.
"Caller advising her mother and father were shot," a 911 dispatcher said in a conversation with police.
When officers arrived at the home, they heard shots come from inside the home. Those officers found three people who had been shot on the second floor of the Reston, Virginia, home.
Because of his injuries, police have not been able to serve the charges against the boy. Four other family members who were at home at the time of the shooting were not hurt.
"It's sad. I mean, I don't know what really happened, but it's devastating," neighbor Sandra Amin said.
