National Symphony Orchestra to Open New Year in D.C.'s Brookland, NoMa

The National Symphony Orchestra is opening the new year with a series of performances in the northeast Washington neighborhoods of Brookland and NoMa.

The musicians will revive their "NSO In Your Neighborhood'' series with free concerts Jan. 5 through Jan. 12. The series opens Monday with a visit to Noyes Education Campus.

Four larger events anchor the series with performances at Union Market, Echostage, Catholic University and McKinley Technology Education Campus. Those performances require free reservations. The full orchestra will perform at Catholic University to celebrate the music school's 50th anniversary.

Musicians will also perform in unexpected venues, including the Central Union Mission homeless shelter, NPR's headquarters and the Capital Area Food Bank. A performance at Children's Hospital on Thursday will include a musical instrument "petting zoo.''
